A ventriloquist act shouldn't scale this well, but five puppets have carried Jeff Dunham to some of the highest-grossing stand-up tours ever recorded. Who he is
Peanut is a hyperactive "woozle" — Jeff's excuse for a body that moves faster than any joke he's written. Purple skin, white fur, a green shock of hair, one sneaker. He was designed before Barney, a fact Jeff has pointed out more than once whenever someone assumes the resemblance runs the other way.
Why he's actually funny
Chaos works because it removes the safety net. A scripted joke asks the room for permission; Peanut interrupts before permission is granted, so the laugh lands as relief instead of anticipation. Kids read him as literally silly, teens read him as the one who gets away with things, adults read him as the id nobody gets to run in a real meeting — which is why he clicks with almost everyone in the room at once. He derails conversations because the derailing is the bit: every aside is a small rebellion against the format of stand-up itself, and Jeff visibly "losing control" is staged control — the appearance of the act coming apart is the craft.
Why he's my guy
Out of all five, Peanut's the one I actually see myself in. Same restless, can't-sit-still energy — the reflex to riff on everything and derail a serious moment with a joke before anyone asked. The difference is he's a little menace about it and I (mostly) point that energy at something useful. Same wiring, better manners. Not a bad kid — just a fast one.
